A few points about liturgy
“Life and liturgy are one” Louis Bouyer, French Theologian

Liturgy means “the work of the people”, therefore it is the responsibility of the whole worshipping community.

The Sacraments point to the sacramentality of all life, that God is present in all our life experiences.
The liturgy celebrates what we believe and strengthens what we believe.
The liturgy is the summit towards which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows.

According to the Catechism, the liturgy has two purposes: the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful.

All Christians are called to serve, to minister to each other. Some are involved in liturgical ministries such as: Ministers of the Word; Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist; Liturgical Music ministers; altar servers and collectors.

The main aim of the Liturgy sub-committee of Mellifont Parish Pastoral Council is to encourage “full, conscious, active participation in the liturgy” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) .

While the Mass is an act of the whole Church, each parish should have individual pride in how it plays its part.

What does Mellifont Liturgy Group do?

• Supporting those involved in liturgical ministries.
• Coordinates Holy Week liturgies.

• Plans special celebrations e.g. the feast of the Assumption

• Organises a Mass for exam students

• Plans ecumenical services with members of other denominations

• Prepares sacred spaces in the sanctuary

• Coordinates music ministry in the parish

• Provides training/reflection for those involved in liturgical ministries

• Seeks to encourage “full, conscious, active participation in the liturgy”

At present there are only two lay members on the Liturgy sub-committee of the P.P.C., Niall Moonan and Catherine Logue. The group would enthusiastically welcome new members. If you are interested in becoming involved in this group please give your name to Fr Seán or leave your name and contact details in the sacristy and one of the group will contact you.
